On the occasion of the Cannes Film Festival, Air France has added a new chapter on the film world to its website www.airfrancelasaga.com.

When and how did cinema get on board? In what way has film screening developed? Through a voyage through time, www.airfrancelasaga.com invites surfers to discover several films portraying the story of Air France and cinema.

Among the films shown are documentaries about Air France, its destinations, not forgetting a few excerpts from famous films where Air France plays a star role like Le distrait, La boum, Mermoz, Au grand balcon, Plus vite que le soleil, Le miroir à deux faces, etc.

The website also proposes a gallery of photos exclusively made up of actors and actresses who posed for the photo on the aircraft stairs, during a trip they were making with Air France.

The website offers an identical interface to that of a DVD menu, providing the surfer with easy access as well as intuitive navigation.

The website www.airfrancelasaga.com was created by Streampower (Havas Entertainment) and is designed to preserve and share Air France’s historical and cultural heritage with as many people as possible.

Air France is the official carrier for the Cannes Film Festival, of which it has been a partner since 1987.

Europe’s biggest cinema

With 85 films available on board its aircraft, Air France is Europe’s biggest cinema in the number of films it shows. Each month passengers can find ten films currently showing in cinemas, 61 recent box office and legendary films, and 14 world cinema films screened in their original version (in Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Korean, Tamil, Latin-American, Arab and African) .

Throughout the festival, Air France is proposing a special Cannes programme on board its long-haul flights, with seven prize-winning films including Golden Palms.

Air France offers 23,000 seats equipped with individual video in all cabins.

Alitalia: AIR FRANCE KLM regretfully forced to accept that there is no longer any basis for further negotiations

When it submitted its final offer on 14 March this year, Air France-KLM clearly indicated that the offer was contingent on prior agreement with the trade unions representative of the majority of the various categories of Alitalia employees (ground staff, flight crews); this agreement concerned the implementation of the Alitalia restructuring plan and its related severance measures. Air France-KLM know from experience that in the airline industry no restructuring plan has ever succeeded if it was not first agreed by employees. Consequently, Air France-KLM has always considered that the Alitalia industrial plan would have no chance of success unless it had the backing of the trade unions representing Alitalia's workforce.

After several lengthy negotiation sessions, the trade unions today formulated a new proposal corresponding to a totally different framework to the one in which Air France-KLM had restricted itself since Autumn 2007.

In formal terms, Air France-KLM was thus regretfully forced to accept that there was no longer any basis for further negotiations. This is because Air France-KLM has no mandate from its Board of Directors to follow up this new proposal. As regards content, the new proposal, which would involve retaining a number of activities generating large scale-losses within the Alitalia group, seems incompatible with the target of a rapid return to profit.

Chairman Spinetta said: "I regretfully acknowledge the breakdown in negotiations, which is none of our doing. This is a project I have profoundly believed in and continue to do so, because it would have ensured Alitalia a rapid return to profitable growth”.

Alitalia : Introductory statement by Jean-Cyril SPINETTA at the meeting with the Italian trade unions

“The aim of the Air France-KLM group is not to take over Alitalia, but to see whether it is possible to build a major global airline group together with the entire Alitalia workforce”.

Today, Jean-Cyril Spinetta met with national representatives from the main Italian trade unions at Alitalia’s Head Office (CISL,CGIL, UIL, UGL, UP, AVIA, ANPAC, ANPAV and SDL).

Global competition

The Chairman reminded participants that consolidation was vital for survival to cope with the opening of new markets and the deregulation of air transport. To this end, we need to build tomorrow’s air transport leaders in Europe, thereby safeguarding jobs in an increasingly competitive market. This is the goal of the Air France-KLM’s offer, designed to include Alitalia.

Economic context

The Chairman recalled the context surrounding the proposal from the AF-KL Group: an increasingly difficult environment marked by the prospect of economic slowdowns and the steep rise of oil prices which is adversely affecting all airlines.

In this difficult context, the proposal made by the Air France KLM group provides Alitalia with a real future by contributing to its recovery. “The aim of the Air France-KLM group is not to take over Alitalia, but to see whether it is possible to build a major global airline group together with the entire Alitalia workforce”, he declared.

Involving the personnel in this project

The Chairman reminded participants that the prospects of a real future justified the offer made and implied, to begin with, the implementation of a recovery plan. “We wish to reach an agreement with you, for each category of staff you represent. No service business can possibly succeed without the commitment of all its personnel. With your contribution, Alitalia will once again become profitable”.
