Combating deforestation in Madagascar:

Programme Holistique de Conservation des Forêts (PHCF) à Madagascar

Deforestation accounts for 15% of greenhouse gas emissions,or the equivalent of the entire global transport sector (2% for air transport). Over the past 50 years the planet has lost around 50% of its forest cover as close to 13 million hectares of forest land disappear each year around the world. All over the world such deforestation brings climate, social, and economic problems in its wake. But it also creates problems of erosion and a massive loss of biodiversity, because no less than 75% of terrestrial animal and plant species live in forests

In partnership with l'Agence Française de Développement (AFD), the Fond Français pour l'Environnement Mondial (FFEM), GoodPlanet and EtcTerra, Air France is supporting a major project, namely the Holistic Conservation Program for Forests (HCPF), covering some 515,000 hectares of forest land in Madagascar.

In 2008, Air France decided to invest 5 million euros over four years in this project, spearheaded by the GoodPlanet Foundation and run locally by WWF. The program’s objectives are:

  • Preserve potential storage of 60-70 millionmetric tons of carbon
  • Assist development of local people
  • Protect the island’s biodiversity
