Air France has signed a partnership with the French atomic energy authority, CEA (Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies alternatives) to manufacture biofuel from forestry waste.

Du biocarburant à partir de déchets forestiers

The synthetic jetfuel, called BtL (Biomass to Liquid), was certified for use in 2009 in a maximum 50% mixture with conventional kerosene.

From May 2015, a part of the output will be available for Air France to use. Sustainable biofuels currently constitute the most promising avenue of progress to drastically cut airline CO2 emissions.

Such fuels will be essential if AIR FRANCE KLM and the rest of the airline industry are to achieve the reduction target of carbon-neutral growth by 2020 and to cut CO2 emissions by 50% in 2050 relative to the 2005 level.

The initiative is part of the AIR FRANCE KLM Climate Action Plan.
