Young people in difficulties

Martinique

Helping young prisoners to transform their lives through access to basic knowledge and skills.

The association aims to reintegrate prisoners through personalized reading programmes. It combats illiteracy and isolation among a population who spend 22 hours a day in their cells. By promoting reading for pleasure, writing and weekly visits from a trained volunteer, young inmates are offered a second chance to learn basic knowledge and skills. The project uses a method that helps the young prisoners overcome their feelings of solitude and initial rejection of reading. They are invited to choose a book from a specially compiled catalogue and receive help in understanding it. They discuss the work before completing a book report and recommending a new book. This programme is eligible for requests for reduced or modified sentences. The objectives are to improve students’ level of reading, writing and oral expression in French and help reintegrate them in the school system.
