Citizenship and environmental awareness programme for young people from the Mangueirinho favela in Rio de Janeiro.
Terra dos Homens promotes the role of the family and community for children and young people whose rights have been infringed. The aim of the project is to encourage the dissemination of values relating to the preservation of nature and quality of life. Newspapers on this theme are published by a group of 20 young leaders living in a favela on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The newspapers are distributed to the community (over 200 inhabitants) at events centred around three priorities – reduced consumption, reuse and recycling. The young leaders have an essential role in relaying to their community the knowledge they have acquired about protecting the environment. Information is also exchanged via social media to raise awareness among a wider public. Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are referred to this association by neighbouring schools.
