Citizenship and environmental awareness programme for young people from the Manguerinha favela in Rio de Janeiro
Terra dos Homens promotes the role of the family and community for children and young people whose rights have been infringed. Its work is centred around three areas – direct support through community development projects and reintegration, training, and the defense of children’s rights. The ambition of this project, now in phase 2, is to encourage the dissemination of values relating to the preservation of nature and a better quality of life. The Air France Foundation supports this project, which was initiated by a group of 20 teenagers living in the Manguerinha favela. They work to spread the values of non-violence and environmental awareness. They publish newspapers and distribute them at community events. They publish their work on social media. Awareness-raising actions around the 3R priorities – Reduced consumption, Reuse and Recycling – are organized every year. These events also provide an opportunity to sell recycled products made by young beneficiaries of the association’s programmes, and to campaign against all forms of abuse.
