Psychosocial support and environmental awareness for pregnant young girls from the Mangueirinha favela in Rio de Janeiro

The mission of Terra dos Homens is to promote family and community life for children and teenagers whose rights have not been respected or are under threat. Several studies and research efforts have shown a high rate of early pregnancy among teenagers from favelas. These young girls experience situations of extreme stress that can result in violent reactions towards their child or children. Other environmental issues are also at play. Supported by the Air France Foundation since 2006, the programme offered to 30 pregnant teenagers provides “awareness” activities, the main aim of which is to prevent the risks of intrafamily violence. The activities provided include training workshops on newborn health and care, psychosocial support and environmental preservation awareness.
